KTM 790 Adventure, A Dealers (biased) Perspective.

Introducing the KTM 790 Adventure S & R, a bike I have been waiting for since KTM discontinued their legendary single, the 640 Adventure. A special thanks to KTM South Africa for the privilege of experiencing these bikes in Morocco, shortly after their International Launch. An honor indeed. A lot of people have asked my opinion, so here it is. FYI (or rather for what it’s worth) I have gone out of my way not to read or watch any reviews on the KTM 790 Adventure, I wanted no preconceived ideas, I wanted to form my own opinion. Although, I have heard expressions of disappointment at the weight of the bike as well…

    Namibia 2017, Tough Call

This post requires background for context. Amanda (thats my wife, she is not on this trip Johnny, relax, you did not miss anything) and I have been Adventuring Namibia since 2003. Every trip has been memorable for different reasons, good & bad. Through the years Ive learned to heed the signs, when Mother Nature speaks, you listen and never tempt fate, its not worth it. No matter what. With 1000km to cover including a stop for tyres at KTM Windhoek it was going to be a long day in the saddle and we could hardly afford any problems. With a dodgy oil pressure light and rather tired looking chain, I decided to err…

    Namibia 2017, Adventure 101

Today was text book “How not to Adventure Bike”, precisely the reason we do “Adventure Bootcamps”. Something small escalates into a crazy sequence of events and things spiral out of control. In groups, things escalate more easily and good intentions go bad, often making the situation exponentially worse. Having the presence of mind to notice that its happening and take back control of the situation is crucial, not always easy in the heat of the moment. Bootcamp covers bike preparation, hydration, nutrition and general situational awareness designed to prepare the Rider for the unexpected and emergency situations, where things escalate quickly. Picture this scene playing out in the desert, we have the movie…

    Namibia 2017, Tyred

Yesterday Namibia fed us Lemons, so we made Lemonade. We also made a public service video of it, “Changing tyres by Committee!” With knobblies already shearing off The Generals front tyre, punctures were no surprise. Although a punctured rear was! Very quickly the committee agreed to swap Andy 990 (tube) rear Mitas EO7 with Martins 1190 (tubeliss), hoping that gator and tube would make Eupupa Falls, and it did. We have reached the halfway point and Spirits (read Vodka levels) are high. In fact, im starting to feel like a Russain! Epupa falls are spectacular, albeit low, well worth the effort of getting here. This morning we start our return journey, bitter sweet.…
